Modern Poetry Edition #36, (Songs to Sing in the Shower)

All right, somebody bring me a mirror.  Jerome.  That's right.  I want y'all to see when I give you the MPulitzer.  The Drifters blew a huge lead as they were caught at the finish line by the Jane's Addiction.  But nipping them both was Morris Day and The Time with Gigolos Get Lonely Too.  It is none other than Prince Rogers Nelson getting the writing credit.  Welcome to our hallowed halls.  It was five to four to four in a very close race or as Moses Malone would put it, fi' fo' fo'. Enjoy.  New MP is minutes away.

Modern Poetry #36 {Songs to Sing in the Shower}

Singing in the Rain by Gene Kelly
Under the Boardwalk by The Drifters
**Gigolos Get Lonely Too by The Time (w/b Prince)
Splish Splash by Bobby Darin
Standing In The Shower...Thinking by Jane's Addiction

**Winner of MPulitzer

--------------------------
Check out the slick voting comments from Steve:

The Drifters: Disqualified. Committing lewd acts in public (Really?)
Bobby Darin: Disqualified. he exposed himself to minors. (He did what?)
Janes Addiction: Disqualified. Pisses on themselves ... [heroin] abusers. (Yeah well I figured that)
Prince: see above three explanations. (He's a little freaky, but no MJ)
Which leaves only Gene Kelly, who everyone knows is unimpeachable. Not terribly poetic, but he is the last man standing.

--------------------------
Slowly, but surely, like W. in Florida, the collaboration between Prince and The Time has chased down the early leader, The Drifters for the illustrious 36th MPulitzer.  It is 4-4 between the two, with Jane's Addiction next with two and Gene Kelly and Bobby Darin one vote each.  Every submission got at least one vote -- that is fairly rare, though it happened recently with Marquis' excellently guest edited collection.

So, if you have not yet voted (Corlew), get that thing in.  We have not ever had to invoke the complicated MP tiebreaking machinery, and I would not want to start now.  So get down with the get down, and vote -- but not if you have already voted.  Polls close in a matter of hours, so be quick about it.

Look here if you have forgotten what all the selections in MP36 are:  http://www.macdart.com/mp/mp_036.htm

Look for results soon, and oh yeah, a Dynamite new edition of the Modern Poetry.

All right sports fans, get out of bed and into the shower. Laminate this edition of the MP and take it into the shower with you and sing away. There's five little numbers here that's bound to bring down the house when you belt 'em out of the shower. The acoustics are even better if you're bathing in the tub.

First, welcome in, Tammy, the latest addition to the MP society. It is she who I plagiarized when the need to 'get the vote out' arose in MP #31. See that edition here: http://www.macdart.com/mp/mp_031.htm. Not only was she not upset, she didn't even sue. Tammy, hope you like this edition too. Remember, you can always see all the modern poetry here: http://www.macdart.com/mp/default.htm.

There is Singing in the Rain by Gene Kelly from the Movie of the same name (dang, wonder if there is a book called Singing in the Rain), which was also done wonderfully if violently by Malcolm McDowell (currently Terrance in Entourage) in Clockwork Orange. Good tune, good poem.

Under the Boardwalk by The Drifters was made popular by the team on the White Shadow and was a favorite on my freshman hall for shower singing, as was Gigolos Get Lonely Too. Splish Splash by Bobby Darin and Standing In The Shower...Thinking, well those are just obligatory selections for a busy chief editor trying to get launched into football, keeping up with work, etc. This is a light-hearted edition. Don't stress. Don't strain your symbolism detectors. These are easy ones. Just read 'em and vote.

And I will be ready for another guest editor toward the end of September. If you think you can follow in the footsteps of Abbay and Marquis, drop me a line indicating your interest.

Singing in the Rain by Gene Kelly
===================================
I'm singing in the rain
Just singin' in the rain
What a glorious feeling
I'm happy again
I'm laughing at clouds
So dark up above
The sun's in my heart
And I'm ready for love
Let the stormy clouds chase
Everyone from the place
Come on with the rain
I've a smile on my face
I walk down the lane
With a happy refrain
Singin', just singin' in the rain
dancing in the rain
ohh ia ohh ia ia
I'am happy again
I'am singing and dancing'in the rain
...
dancing and singin'in the rain

Under the Boardwalk by The Drifters
========================================
Oh when the sun beats down and burns the tar up on the roof
And your shoes get so hot you wish your tired feet were fire-proof
Under the boardwalk, down by the sea, yeah
On a blanket with my baby is where I'll be

(Under the boardwalk) out of the sun
(Under the boardwalk) we'll be havin' some fun
(Under the boardwalk) people walking above
(Under the boardwalk) we'll be making love
Under the board-walk, board-walk!

From the park you hear the happy sound of a carousel
Mm-mm, you can almost taste the hot dogs and French fries they sell
Under the boardwalk, down by the sea
On a blanket with my baby is where I'll be

(Under the boardwalk) out of the sun
(Under the boardwalk) we'll be havin' some fun
(Under the boardwalk) people walking above
(Under the boardwalk) we'll be making love
Under the board-walk, board-walk!

Oooooh, under the boardwalk, down by the sea, yeah
On a blanket with my baby is where I'll be

(Under the boardwalk) out of the sun
(Under the boardwalk) we'll be havin' some fun
(Under the boardwalk) people walking above
(Under the boardwalk) we'll be falling in love
Under the board-walk, board-walk!

Gigolos Get Lonely Too by The Time (w/b Prince)
====================================================
I guess you've heard of my reputation, I've had my share of foolin' around.
But everybody needs stimulation, and mine just happens to be all over town.
It's an easy-money occupation, a first-class psychiatry.
But just once, I'd wanna make love without taking off my clothes.
Just once, I wanna make love with somebody who really and truly knows:

Contrary to rumor, gigolos get lonely too.
All my lovers need stimulation, but honey babe, I think that I need you.

Maybe you're the kind of person, that could turn my world around.
Won't you gimme little inspiration? Maybe that's what I need to make me settle down.
It's an easy-money occupation, but honey one thing understand.
I've got more money than you could imagine in your wildest dreams.
But honey, money don't make no happy man.

Contrary to rumor, gigolos get lonely too.
All my lovers need stimulation, but honey babe, I think that I need you.

Just once, I wanna love without takin' off my clothes.
Just once, I wanna love with somebody who knows.
That I got more money than you could ever see.
But honey, money won't get me up off my knees.

Gigolos get lonely too.
All my lovers need stimulation. But honey babe, I think that I need you.

What cha gonna do, baby? Oh, what cha, what cha gonna do?
Ah, do you think we could have dinner sometimes, baby? Well, how about tonight?
Baby?

Splish Splash by Bobby Darin
===================================
Splish splish, I was takin' a bath
Long about a Saturday night
A rub-a-dub, just relaxin' in the tub
Thinkin' everything was alright
Well, I stepped out the tub, put my feet on the floor
I wrapped the towel around me and I
Opened the door, and then a..
Splish, splash... I jumped back in the bath.
Well how was I to know there was a party going on?

They was a-splishin' and a'splashin'
Reelin' with the feelin', movin' and a'groovin'
Rockin' and a'rollin', yeah

Bing bang, I saw the whole gang
Dancin' on my living room rug, yeah!
Flip flop, they was doin' the bop
All the teens had the dancin' bug
There was lollipop with a Peggy Susan
Good Golly, Miss Molly was-a even there, too!
A- well-a, splish splash, I forgot about the bath
I went and put my dancin' shoes on, yay...

I was a rollin' and a strollin', reelin' with the feelin',
Moving and a groovin', splishin' and a splashin', yeah!
Yes, I was a-splishin'' and a splashin'...
I was a-rollin' and a-strollin'...

Yeah, I was a-movin' and a-groovin'
We was a-reelin' with the feelin'
We was a-rollin' and a-strollin'
Movin' with the groovin' splish splash, yeah

Standing In The Shower... Thinking by Jane's Addiction
=========================================================
Standing in the shower thinking
About what makes a man
An outlaw or a leader
I'm thinking about power...
The ways a man could use it
Or be destroyed by it
The water hits my neck
And I'm pissing on myself...

Standing... In the shower... Thinking.

Standing in the shower thinking
About a man I know don't like me
He don't like the place I'm headed
Same place he's headed...
I know he'd beat me to it
If he could but he won't do it
But he would man
If he could...
And the water is so f-cking hot..
The water is so f-cking hot
It beats upon my neck
And I'm pissing on myself...

Standing... In the shower... Thinking.

Standing in the shower thinking
Is my woman afraid of me?
She's seen how far I've twisted
It's just cause I can trust her
And ever since we met
She understood so she let
Me twist her good...
I twist her good...
And the water is so f-cking hot
The water is so f-cking hot
It beats upon my neck
And I'm pissing on myself...

Standing... In the shower... Thinking.
