Modern Poetry Edition #31, (Goodbye) Guest Editor: Abbay

Welcome back to the Modern Poetry my little pretties.  Time to
thrown another MPulitzer Prize up in your grill.  Tepid voting this week
let Supertramp snake the prize.  It's well good poetry, and it was
even my choice this week, my first winner in a while, I believe.
More importantly (ok, maybe about as importantly), it was also
the choice of our Guest Editor, Abbay.  Bon Jovi got skunked, as
is appropriate for the NJ longhairs, but Michael Jackson's getting
zero votes raised eyebrows around MPHQ.  'Never Can Say
Goodbye' is a classic track from the King of Pop (KOP).  We
must surmise that the voters ferreted out that though the song
is top notch, the poetry is kind of bland.  Well done people.

The 'Goodbye Stranger' poem is almost a perfect modern poem.
Note that it is understandable, deeper than it seems, but not
too deep.  And boy does it rhyme.  We like those poems that
do the rhyming.  "Goodbye stranger it's been nice, Hope you
find your paradise;  Tried to see your point of view, Hope your
dreams will all come true."  Love it.

The only problem with it is that I am now left one poem short
on my Camus themed edition of 'The Stranger.'  Give me a few
days to come up with the next edition.  You'll like it, I knew you
would.

Many thanks to Abbay for the G.E. duties.  Future guests will
do future editing.  Look for them soon.

(Shamefully plagiarized and adapted from
A Web Page Article Written By Tammy Miser
called "Your Right, Privilege & Duty ")

Suffrage, the right to vote, is something many in the Modern Poetry
community take for granted. All too often people forget that this right is
also a privilege and further, it is a duty.

The right to vote wasnít always granted to all. In the early MP days, the
powers provided the right to vote to white males, and sometimes even then,
it was restricted to landowners and taxpayers.

Voting was a great privilege when it was extended to all males, then women
and finally 18-20. Long hard struggles were endured in order for these
groups to achieve the right to be counted in our society's Modern Poetry
decisions.

It is your duty to be an informed voter. Your duty is to our nation of
poetry enthusiasts, your children and the ones who came before us that
fought so diligently to gain the privileged right to vote. It is also a
duty to the poets, who may lose a deserved award to some vapid airhead because
of low voter turnout. So why do so many choose not to vote? The small group
that I polled had pretty much the same answers, none of them worth much:

*All the poems are equally great.
*I just donít get modern poetry.
*I donít hate the poets, but I hate a lot of the poems.
*I donít have time.
*One person's vote canít make a difference.
*Iím not rich so my opinion doesnít count.

These are all wrong. Vote dammit! BTW, so far it's Beatles 1, Supertramp 1.

Some of this monthís selections say ďhelloĒ, but all of them say ďgoodbyeĒ.
In preparing for my upcoming wedding, Iíve realized that getting married
introduces many new things to your life, yet forces you to say goodbye to
others. Here are five of my favorite goodbye (or refuse to say goodbye)
songs. Iíve included my favorite male artist, an infamous pop icon, my
dadís perennial favorite, some boys from across the pond, and a junior high
(at least for me) torch song. Poetry? Iím not sure. You be the judge.

Last Goodbye by Jeff Buckley
==========================================
This is our last goodbye
I hate to feel the love between us die
But it's over
Just hear this and then I'll go :
you gave me more to live for,
more than you'll ever know.

This is our last embrace,
must I dream and always see your face
Why can't we overcome this wall
Baby, maybe it is just because I didn't know you at all.

Kiss me, please,
Kiss me
But kiss me out of desire, babe, and not consolation
You know,
it makes me so angry 'cause I know that in time
I'll only make you cry, this is our last goodbye.

Did you say no, this can't happen to me,
and did you rush to the phone to call?
Was there a voice unkind in the back of your mind saying,
maybe... you didn't know him at all.

Well, the bells out in the church tower chime
Burning clues into this heart of mine
Thinking so hard on her soft eyes and the memory
Of her sighs that, it's over... it's over...

Never Can Say Goodbye by Michael Jackson
==========================================
Never can say goodbye
No, no, no, no... I
I never can say goodbye
Even tho' the pain and heartache seem to follow me wherever I go
Tho' I tried and tried to hide my feelings then always seem to show
Then you try to say you're leaving me and I always have to say no
Tell me why is it so?
But I never can say goodbye
No, no, no, no
I never can say goodbye
Ev'ry time I think I've had enough and start heading for the door
There's very strange vibrations, piercing me right to the core
It says turn around you fool you know you love her more and more
Tell me why is it so?

Don't wanna let you go
I never can say goodbye girl
(never can say goodbye, girl)
Ohh, ohh, baby,
(don't wanna let you go, girl)
I never can say goodbye,
No, no, no, no, no, no

Ohh, I never can say goodbye girl
(never can say goodbye, girl)
Ohh, ohh, ohh,
(don't wanna let you go, baby)
I never can say goodbye,
No, no, no, no, no, no,
Ohh

Never can say goodbye
No, no, no, no
I never can say goodbye
I keep thinkin' that our problems soon are all gonna work out
But there's that same unhappy feelin' there's that anguish, there's that
doubt
It's that same old dizzy hang-up can't do with you or without
Tell me why is it so?

Don't wanna let you go
I never can say goodbye girl
(never can say goodbye, girl)
Ohh, ohh, baby,
(baby)
I never can say goodbye
No, no, no, no, no, no

Ohh, I never can say goodbye girl
(never can say goodbye, girl)
Ohh, ohh, ohh,
(baby)
I never can say goodbye,
No, no, no, no, no, no,
Ohh

Goodbye Stranger by Supertramp
==========================================
It was an early morning yesterday
I was up before the dawn
And I really have enjoyed my stay
But I must be moving on

Like a king without a castle
Like a queen without a throne
I'm an early morning lover
And I must be moving on

Now I believe in what you say
Is the undisputed truth
But I have to have things my own way
To keep me in my youth

Like a ship without an anchor
Like a slave without a chain
Just the thought of those sweet ladies
Sends a shiver through my veins

{Bridge}
And I will go on shining
Shining like brand new
I'll never look behind me
My troubles will be few

Goodbye stranger it's been nice
Hope you find your paradise
Tried to see your point of view
Hope your dreams will all come true
Goodbye Mary, goodbye Jane
Will we ever meet again
Feel no sorrow, feel no shame
Come tomorrow, feel no pain
Now sweet devotion is not for me
Goodbye Mary, Goodbye Jane
Just give me motion to set me free
Will we ever meet again
In the land and the ocean far away
Feel no sorrow, feel no shame
It's the life I've chosen, every day
Come tomorrow, feel no pain

So, goodbye Mary, goodbye Jane
Goodbye Mary, Goodbye Jane
Will we ever meet again
Will we ever meet again

Now some they do and some they don't
And some you just can't tell
And some they will and some they won't
For some it's just as well

You can laugh at my behavior
That'll never bother me
Say the Devil is my savior
But I don't pay no heed

So, now I'm leavin', got to go
Goodbye Mary, Goodbye Jane
Hit the road, I'll say it once again
Will we ever meet again
Oh, yes, I'm leaving, I've got to go
Feel no sorrow, feel no shame
Got to go, I'm sorry I have to tell you
Come tomorrow, feel no pain

Goodbye Mary, goodbye Jane
Goodbye Mary, Goodbye Jane
Will we ever meet again
Will we ever meet again

Never Say Goodbye by Bon Jovi
==========================================
As I sit in this smokey room
The night about to end
I pass my time with strangers
But this bottle's my only friend

Remember when we used to park
On Butler Street out in the dark
Remember when we lost the keys
And you lost more than that in my backseat

Remember when we used to talk
About busting out - we'd break their hearts
Together - forever

Never say goodbye, never say goodbye
You and me and my old friends
Hoping it would never end
Never say goodbye, never say goodbye
Holdin' on - we got to try
Holdin' on to never say goodbye

Remember days of skipping school
Racing cars and being cool
With a six pack and the radio
We didn't need no place to go

Remember at the prom that night
You and me we had a fight
But the band they played our favorite song
And I held you in my arms so strong

We danced so close
We danced so slow
And I swore I'd never let you go
Together - forever

Never say goodbye, never say goodbye
You and me and my old friends
Hoping it would never end
Never say goodbye, never say goodbye
Holdin' on - we got to try
Holdin' on to never say goodbye

I guess you'd say we used to talk
About busting out
We'd break their hearts
Together - forever
