Modern Poetry Edition #58 {Superman} Guest Editor: Traci
Hear ye hear ye, I say the Spin Doctors have won an MPulitzer. It's our 58th
such award, and we couldn't be prouder of the shaggy uber-mensches and their
pocketfuls. It was close. FiveFor and ThreeDoors were very close. R. Kelly could
not overcome the image problem and the fact that his is the best *song* of the
bunch doesn't count for much in the old MP. That's it. I need to go actually
*type* in some lyrics for next week's edition.
And as always in parting, I wish you love, peace and soul!

**Jimmy Olsen's Blues by The Spin Doctors
Superman by Five For Fighting
Phone Booth by Robert Cray
Kryptonite by Three Doors Down
I Believe I Can Fly by R. Kelly
**Winner of MPulitzer
---------------------------------------
It is still too close to call though R. Kelly seems out of it. Spin Docs, 3
Doors Down, and Five for Fighting are close and Robert Cray is still in it. Did
you know Robert Cray played bass in Otis Day and the Knights in the movie,
Animal House? Hey, any of you too young to remember Animal House? I guess you'd
say it was kind of like Old School, and maybe that is the closest thing we have
today, but let me tell you: It's NOTHING like Old School. It's a 10. Go see it.
For the record, no Animal House cast member has ever won an MPulitzer, but it's
possible Belushi's "Crawlin' Kingsnake" will be included soon.
Vote 'em up, smack it, rub it down. I mean if you haven't already.

Hey Now! Get up on your feet. London, make some noi-oise!
Welcome to the New Modern Poetry. We're gonna rock it Superman styleeeeee. Now, I was never big on comics, or the Superman movies either, though I once did try racing my little gold Honda backwards at ever-increasing speeds round the blue marble in an attempt to rewind a rough Saturday night in Pacific Northwest. It didn't work, but life goes on. I also once saw the new modern poets, the Spin Doctors out there in Oregon in the days of grunge. I liked them, but the crowd was a bit aggro for the Doctors. "This ain't slam-dancin' music!" they yelled to no avail.
This edition is brought to you by Traci, and when I heard about it, I dropped down into jr. editor mode, happily serving as Traci's assistant on this Superhero's MP. This is one for the vault, full o' kryptonite, Superhero angst, smokin' 80's blues from Robert Cray and a poetry-less pin-up shot of Streisand. Surely you're expecting to be billed double for all that.
Anyway, there is no Superhero by Jane's Addiction, one of my favorite modern acts. Since it's the theme song for Entourage, we didn't want to be seen bandwagoning on their success. Also no Ubermensch, though we found two songs with that title, each more twisted than anything I have seen recently. Google it, if you want to.
So without further doo-doo, here are the poems. Wait, I forgot the Babs pin-up. Here it is:
We got trouble, right here in Gotham city, and it starts with Jimmy Olsen and his pocketful of kryptonite, Five for Fighting's neurotic twist on the man in blue tights, and Cray's soulful longings from a phone booth. Three Doors Down (3DD, I apologize for often confusing you with Third Eye Blind, really truly I do) rocks the house with Kryptonite next, and then R. Kelly's "I Believe I Can Fly" rounds out the stellar edition.
Savor the selections. Then vote. Or don't. I don't care. Sometimes I don't even count the votes anyway. Just kidding. But not really.
Traci says, "Hey, guys! Our theme this edition is Superman, so vote!" Listen to her and maybe she'll guest again soon.

Jimmy Olsen's Blues by The Spin Doctors

I don't think I can handle this
A cloudy day in Metropolis
I think I'll talk to my analyst
I got it so bad for this little journalist
It drives me up the wall and through the roof
Lois and Clark in a telephone booth
I think I'm going out of my brain
I got it so bad for little miss Lois Lane
Oh, Lois Lane, please put me in your plan
Yeah, Lois Lane, you don't need no Superman
Come on downtown and stay with me tonight
I got a pocket full of kryptonite
I got a pocket full of kryptonite
I got a pocket full of kryptonite
He's leaping buildings in a single bound
And I'm reading Shakespeare in my place downtown
Come on downtown and make love to me
I'm Jimmy Olsen, not a titan, you see
He's faster than a bullet, stronger than a train
He's the one who got lucky - got a cape around miss Lois Lane
I can't believe my dilemma is real
I'm competing with the man of steel
Oh, Lois Lane, please put me in your plan
Yeah, Lois Lane, you don't need no Superman
Come on downtown and stay with me tonight
I got a pocket full of kryptonite
I got a pocket full of kryptonite
I got a pocket full of kryptonite
I don't think I can handle this
A cloudy day in Metropolis
I think I'll talk to my analyst
I got it so bad for this little journalist
Oh, Lois Lane, please put me in your plan
Yeah, Lois Lane, you don't need no Superman
Come on downtown and stay with me tonight
I got a pocket full of kryptonite
I got a pocket full of kryptonite
I got a pocket full of kryptonite

I can’t stand to fly
I’m not that naive
I’m just out to find
The better part of me
I’m more than a bird... I’m more than a
plane
More than some pretty face beside a train
It’s not easy to be me
Wish that I could cry
Fall upon my knees
Find a way to lie
About a home I’ll never see
It may sound absurd...but don’t be naive
Even heroes have the right to bleed
I may be disturbed...but won’t you concede
Even heroes have the right to dream
It’s not easy to be me
Up, up and away...away from me
It’s all right...you can all sleep sound tonight
I’m not crazy...or anything...
I can’t stand to fly
I’m not that naive
Men weren’t meant to ride
With clouds between their knees
I’m only a man in a silly red sheet
Digging for kryptonite on this one way street
Only a man in a funny red sheet
Looking for special things inside of me
Inside of me
Inside me
Yeah, inside me
Inside of me
I’m only a man
In a funny red sheet
I’m only a man
Looking for a dream
I’m only a man
In a funny red sheet
And it’s not easy, hmmm, hmmm, hmmm...
Its not easy to be me
Phone Booth by Robert Cray

I'm in a phone booth, baby
Number scratched on the wall
I'm in a phone booth, baby
Number scratched on the wall
I'm new in Chicago
Got no one else to call
Been walkin' all day
For old friends I can't find
Hearts so cold
Had to buy me some wine
Calling you, baby
Took my very last dime
I'm in a phone booth, baby
Number scratched up on the wall
I'm in a phone booth, baby
Number scratched on the wall
I'm new in Chicago
Got no one else to call
Said call Big Rita
Anytime, day or night
You know I'm broke and I'm cold, baby
And I hope you'll treat me right
I'm in a phone booth, baby
With the cold wind right outside
Kryptonite by Three Doors Down
===================================================================================
I took a walk around the world to ease my troubled mind
I left my body lying somewhere in the sands of time
I watched the world float to the dark side of the moon
I feel theirs nothing I can do
Yeah...
I watched the world float to the dark side of
the moon
After I all knew it had to be something to do with you
I really don't mind what happens now and then, as long as you'll be my friend
at the end.
If I go crazy then will you still call me
Superman
If I'm alive and well, will you be there holding my hand
I'll keep you by my side with my super human might...
Kryptonite
You call me strong, you call me weak but still
your secrets
I will keep
You took for granted all the times I never let you down
You stumbled in and bumped your head if not for me then you'd be dead
I picked you up and put you back on solid ground
If I go crazy then will you still call me
Superman
If I'm alive and well, will you be there holding my hand
I'll keep you by my side with my super human might...
Kryptonite
If I go crazy then will you still call me
Superman
If I'm alive and well, will you be thereholding my hand
I'll keep you by my side with my super human might... Kryptonite
Yeah
If I go crazy then will you still call me
Superman
If I'm alive and well, will you be there holding my hand
I'll keep you by my side with my super human might... Kryptonite
I Believe I Can Fly by R. Kelly
===================================================================================
I used to think that I could not go on
And life was nothing but an awful song
But now I know the meaning of true love
I'm leaning on the everlasting arms
If I can see it, then I can do it
If I just believe it, there's nothing to it
I believe I can fly
I believe I can touch the sky
I think about it every night and day
Spread my wings and fly away
I believe I can soar
I see me running through that open door
I believe I can fly
I believe I can fly
I believe I can fly
See I was on the verge of breaking down
Sometimes silence can seem so loud
There are miracles in life I must achieve
But first I know it starts inside of me
If I can see it, then I can be it
If I just believe it, there's nothing to it
I believe I can fly
I believe I can touch the sky
I think about it every night and day
spread my wings and fly away
I believe I can soar
I see me running through that open door
I believe I can fly
I believe I can fly
I believe I can fly
Hey 'Cause I believe in you
oh..............
If I can see it, then I can do it
If I just believe it, there's nothing to it
I believe I can fly
I believe I can touch the sky
I think about it every night and day
spread my wings and fly away
I believe i can soar
I see me running through that open door
I believe I can fly (I can fly)
I believe I can fly (I can fly)
I believe I can fly (I can fly)
If I just spread my wings (I can fly)
I can fly (I can fly)
I can fly (I can fly)
I can fly (I can fly)
If I just spread my wings (I can fly)
I can fly...(i can fly,i can fly)
woo... i can fly
hmmmmm...fly, fly, fly
