Modern Poetry Edition #51 {Spring Mix}

Ohhhhh yeah, Guess who just got back today?
It's them wild-eyed boys that had been away.
Here them come to rock it righteously with
your modern poetry of, course.

Many people came to me last week and said,
"Sean, I don't think you've quite got them
'Roxanne' lyrics right." Which leads us to
the oldest question in modern poetry: is it
the published lyrics or the lyrics as
delivered that make the true modern poem?

Well the SCOTUSOMP (supreme court of the united
states of modern poetry), has left the question
open to interpretation and so, often I like to
leave out things like "Chorus, repeat 8 times."
It's a sort of poetic license, once removed.

Also, aren't we all glad that the high court
of MP, back in MP#4 ruled that it was allowable
to leave out a few lines of Donna Summer's "Hot
Stuff."

Like these:

Hot hot hot hot... Stuuuuufff
Hot hot hot hot hot hot hot... Stuuuuufff
Hot hot hot

Hot hot hot hot... Stuuuuufff
Hot hot hot hot hot hot hot... Stuuuuufff
Hot hot hot

Hot hot hot hot hot hot hot
Hot hot hot hot hot hot
Hot hot hot hot hot hot hot
Hot hot hot hot hot hot
Hot hot hot hot hot hot hot
Hot hot hot hot hot hot
Ooooh I need your lovin' tonight...

So, all apologies if you felt cheated out of your:

Put on the red light
Put on the red light
Put on the red light
Put on the red light
Put on the red light
...(8 times)...

Back to the business at hand. We've another MPulitzer to award.

The Police and Young M.C. had a battle this week. "Uhhh, ok,"
you're saying, "some young California rapper has been battling
with the police -- what else is new?"

No, not the police, The Police. Like Stewart and Andy and
Gordon (Sting) -- The Police. Hard to figure that the Police are
just now in with their first ever nomination, though Sting won
an illustrious MPulitzer in solo fashion back in MP#39
(http://www.macdart.com/mp/mp_039.htm) for Sister Moon.

So George Benson, Greg Kihn and the Super Bon Bon all
just stepped aside to bystand innocently, while the three-
piece from England and the fit clubber went at it. The
bystanders each got one vote each.

Young Marvin was game and took the early lead, a lead
he never relenquished as several MP voters could recall the
social impact Young Marvin had with "Stone Cold Rhymin'"
back in '89 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Young_MC)

Perhaps this was just home turf advantage, but on the
streets of L.A., if you are trotting out some old ode to a
skank that used to be edgy back in '78, and you get into a
rap battle on the street, it would really help if :
   (1) you're not British,
   (2) you're not singing some pining love song to a hoooker,
   (3) you're not calling yourself, 'Tha Police,' and
   (4) Dre and Snoop and the rest of N.W.A ain't out yelling,
"F*** Tha Police!" from every street corner.

Final tally: 7-5 for Young. Welcome in, brother. Glad to
have you.

Look out soon for the MP52 (finally!), the wrap-up edition
for year 2!

**Bust A Move by Young M.C.
Jeopardy by The Greg Kihn Band
Roxanne by The Police
Super Bon Bon by Soul Coughing

**Winner of MPulitzer

We've started the spring cleaning here at MP HQ. Found a few gems in the closet, and here they are, the spring line of various and sundry modern poems that didn't seem to fit anywhere's else. Plus we're a bit distracted. MP staff is headed to Nashville to hear Van The Man perform some modern poetry, live and in person.

Enjoy. Vote quick. Next edition will be out in a week or so.

On Broadway by George Benson
============================== ====
They say the neon lights are bright on broadway
They say there's always magic in the air
But when you're walkin' down the street
And you ain't had enough to eat
The glitter rubs right off and you're nowhere

They say the women treat you fine on broadway
But lookin' at them just gives me the blues
'cause how ya gonna make some time
When all you got is one thin dime
And one thin dime won't even shine your shoes

They say that I won't last too long on broadway
I'll catch a grey hound bus for home they all say
But they're dead wrong I know they are
'cause I can play this here guitar
And I won't quit till I'm a star on broadway

Bust A Move by Young M.C.
============================== ====
This here's a jam for all the fellas
Tryin to do what those ladies tell us
Get shot down cause ya over-zealous
Play hard to get females get jealous
Okay smarty go to a party
Girls are scantily clad and showin body
A chick walks by you wish you could sex her
But you're standing on the wall like you was Poindexter
Next days function high class luncheon
Food they're serving, you're stone-cold munchin
Music comes on people start to dance
But then you ate so much you nearly split your pants
A girl starts walking guys start gawking
Sits down next to you and starts talking
Says she wants to dance cause she likes to groove
So come on fatso and just bust a move

You're on a mission and your wishin
Someone could cure your lonely condition
Lookin for love in all the wrongplaces
No fine girls just ugly faces
Some frustration first inclination
Is to become a monk and leave the situation
But every dark tunnel has a light of hope
So don't hang yourself, with a celibate rope
Your movie's showin, so you're goin
Could care less about the five you're blowin
Theater gets dark just to start the show
Then ya spot a fine woman sittin in your row
She's dressed in yellow, she says "Hello,
come sit next to me you fine fellow."
You run over there without a second to lose
And what comes next hey bust a move

In this city ladies look pretty
Guys tell jokes so they can seem witty
Tell a funny joke just to get some play
Then you try to make a move and she says, "No way"
Girls are fakin goodness sakin
They want the man who brings home the bacon
Got no money and you got no car
Then you got no woman and there you are
Some girls are sadistic, materialistic
Lookin for a man makes them opportunistic
They're lyin on a beach perpetrating a tan
So a brother with the money can be their man
So on the beach you're strollin real high rollin
Everything you have is yours and not stolen
A girl runs up with somethin to prove
So don't just stand there bust a move

Your best friend Harry has a brother Larry
In five days from now he's gonna marry
He's hopin you can make it there if you can
Cause in the ceremony you'll be the best man
You say neat-o, check your libido
And roll to the church in your new tuxedo
The bride walks down just to start the wedding
And there's one more girl you won't be getting
So you start thinkin then you start blinking
The bridesmaid looks and thinks that you're winking
She thinks your kinda cute so she winks back
And now your feelin really firm cause the girl is stacked
Reception's jumpin faces pumpin
You look at the girl and your heart starts thumpin
Says she wants to dance to a different groove
Now you know what to do chief, bust a move

Jeopardy by The Greg Kihn Band
============================== ====
Where were you, When we needed you
Well you could not be found
What can I do, Oh, I believed in you
You're running me around

Well you can take it as a warning
Or take it anyway you like
It's the lightning, not the thunder
You never know where it's gonna strike

Our love's in jeopardy, baby, Ooooh-ooh-oooooh
Our love's in jeopardy, baby, Ooooh-ooh-oooooh

Don't be cute, Don't be funny now
It's later than you think
Oh, what's the use, Save your money now
It's hanging on the brink

Don't let go while I'm hanging on
'Cause I been hanging on so long
It's so hard to be all alone
I know you're not that strong, Yeah, yeah

Our love's in jeopardy, baby, Ooooh-ooh-oooooh
Our love's in jeopardy, baby, Ooooh-ooh-oooooh

Don't let go while I'm hanging on
'Cause I've been hanging on so long
It's so hard to be all alone
I know you're not that strong, Yeah, yeah

Our love's in jeopardy, baby, Ooooh-ooh-oooooh
Our love's in jeopardy, baby, Ooooh-ooh-oooooh

Our love's in jeopardy (jeopardy), baby Ooooh-ooh-oooooh
Our love's in jeopardy (jeopardy), baby Ooooh-ooh-oooooh
Love's in jeopardy, baby

Roxanne by The Police
============================== ====
Roxanne
You don't have to put on the red light
Those days are over
You don't have to sell your body to the night

Roxanne
You don't have to wear that dress tonight
Walk the streets for money
You don't care if it's wrong or if it's right

Roxanne
You don't have to put on the red light

I loved you since I knew you
I wouldn't talk down to you
I have to tell you just how I feel
I won't share you with another boy

I know my mind is made up
So put away your make up
Told you once I won't tell you again
It's a bad way

Roxanne
You don't have to put on the red light
Roxanne
You don't have to put on the red light

Super Bon Bon by Soul Coughing
============================== ====
Move aside
and let the man go through, let the man go through
Move aside
and let the man go through, let the man go through
Move aside
and let the man go through, let the man go through
Move aside
and let the man go through, let the man go through
Through

If I stole, Somebody else's wave, To fly up.
If I rose up, Up with the avenue, Behind me.

Some kind of verb. Some kind of moving thing.
Something unseen. Some hand is motioning
to rise, to rise, to rise.

Too fight that you must cut clean.
You got to take the elevator to the mezzanine,
Chump, change, and it's on, Super bon bon
Super bon bon, Super bon bon.

Too fight that you must cut clean.
You got to take the elevator to the mezzanine,
Chump, change, and it's on, Super bon bon
Super bon bon, Super bon bon.
