Modern Poetry Edition #47 {Dance Mix} Guest Editor:  Hope

Ok, smarty!  Go to a party!  The MP #47 is now over and the winner, via the rare
three-way tie vote, followed by a runaway stompin' in the run-off election, is one
George Ivan "Van" Morrison.  Fantabulous.  We love Van, and are happy to award
him his second MPulitzer.  And a mere 5 weeks to the day before he will play a
concert in Tennessee!  Sweet!  Welcome in (again), my man.

Thanks to Hope for a fine, danceable edition of MP.  We at the MP are
optimistic that this GEE (guest-edited-edition), our third, is the one that puts
the GEE into the collective "buzz."  We envision many intelligent MP readers
stepping up to the call.  Write me some email if you have ideas for future
editions.  No, there is no pay.

I think the chances are good for Van to win another one soon, too, so if your
bookie takes bets on the MP, get your money down.  It's a lead-pipe lock.

Thanks to all who voted.  Check your inbox for a double-shot of MP soon.

MP #47 Delayed!

MODERN POETRY DELAYED! VOTE TOO CLOSE! ENTIRE MP SCHEDULE IN PERIL.
RESULTS DAYS, MAYBE WEEKS LATE!

I believe it was Moses (Malone) who said, "fo' fo' fo'" in describing his
NBA team's likely number of games in each series on the way to the finals
(it turned out fo' fi' fo'). Well, he also named the number of votes for
each of our top three contenders this week (Jamiroquai had a disappointing
1, and the Bee Gee's were skunked) -- three contendas had four votes.

That means run-off election: Come over and check up on it, Beyonce wants
you to work up on it... Check on it tonight... and then submit your votes.

The highbrows in MPHQ (we do have a few) are impressed that none voted for
the Bee Gee's. Usually some smart aleck goes for the silliest line and
certainly, any examination of these lines would drive a forecast of at least
one vote for:

"What you doin’ on your back aah,
What you doin’ on your back aah?
You should be dancing, yeah, Dancing, yeah."

Anyway, we have to have a run-off election, three-way style. In this
corner, wearing long satin garb, are the babes and Bjorn, from Sweeeeden,
AAAAAAAABBBBBBBBAA. And over here in the green corner, wearing a black
suit, white shirt and a felt hat, and more than a little bit of attitude,
from Belfast City, Van "The Man" Morrison. And finally, in the third
corner, wearing sideburns and jeans from the 70's and 80's, without his
cornermen, from California, Mr. Don Henley.

Please vote again. **And vote for two of the three, one first place vote,
one second place vote** MP voters from Florida, pay attention. VOTE FOR
TWO! DO IT BY SUNDAY. DO IT RIGHT.

Dancing Queen by ABBA
Moondance by Van Morrison
All She Wants to Do is Dance by Don Henley

There it is, baby. Get the votes in by Sunday. MP #48 is not going to be
contained in an MP staffer's desk drawer forever.

--------------------------------------------

Welcome in Freds and Gingers. Put your dancing shoes on. It's time for
modern poetry and this time it's poetry in motion. It's all about getting
your groove on.  We wanna see y'alls backfields in motion.  You dig?

Ch-ch-check, check it out.  This week's edition comes to you live
from Hope, our third ever guest editor.  Here is what she had to
say about this week's selections:

My love for dancing has never been in question. Ask anyone who knows me
...I love to shake my groove thang and boogie oogie oogie til I just can't
boogie no more! There is nothing quite like a rhythmic beat, a strobe
light, a disco ball and your best friends making complete fools of
themselves.

So this MP is all 'dance' songs. And several are even dance songs, too.
Dig your moon boots out of the closet, or bust out your platform heels cause
most of these are from the swinging 70's. I've included 2 of my all time
favorites (Henley and ABBA), a disco legend (the brothers Gibb), a recent
cult hit (Jamiroquai for Napoleon), and Van the Man's oft-copied hit (that
Sean made me include). Enjoy! --Hope

I am sure you will enjoy them.  Note that you must read them to enjoy
to the fullest, as I am sure you all will want to.

Look, it takes a master of prose to write "What you doin’ on your back aah,
What you doin’ on your back aah? You should be dancing, yeah, Dancing,
yeah."

And I am sorry to have taken one spot in this week's edition for Moondance,
but you veterans will not be surprised:  if Van has a song that fits your theme,
it's a goin' in. For instance, if you future guest editors choose as your themes,
the following, you will be committing to certain poems by the Belfast cowboy,
the Celtic soul rebel, one George Ivan Morrison:

Geographical Bee Products (Tupelo Honey)
Disease-ridden Bedding (T.B. Sheets)
Crappy Jobs (Cleaning Windows)
Seasons in the UK (Summertime In England)
Females with Various Eye Colors (Brown Eyed Girl)

Ok, enough witty banter.  The MP mainframe is gettin' replaced tomorrow
so tonight we're goin' on lockdown.  Shake a leg! Get to reading them MP's
and vote 'em up. I am late getting this one out, so MP #47 is only going to
be open for a week. Vote quickly, and don't make me ask twice.

You Should Be Dancing by The Bee Gees
=============================================
My baby moves at midnight
Goes right on till the dawn
My woman takes me higher
My woman keeps me warm

What you doin’ on your back aah
What you doin’on your back aah?
You should be dancing, yeah
Dancing, yeah

She’s juicy and she’s trouble
She gets it to me good
My woman gives me power
Goes right down to my blood

What you doin’ on your back aah
What you doin’ on your back aah?
You should be dancing, yeah
Dancing, yeah

My baby moves at midnight
Goes right on till the dawn
My woman takes me higher
My woman keeps me warm

What you doin’ on your back aah
What you doin’on your back aah?
You should be dancing, yeah
Dancing, yeah
You should be dancing, yeah
You should be dancing, yeah
You should be dancing, yeah
You should be dancing, yeah
You should be dancing, yeah

All She Wants to Do is Dance by Don Henley
=============================================
They’re pickin’ up the prisoners and puttin’ ’em in the pen
And all she wants to do is dance, dance
Rebels been rebels since I don’t know when
And all she wants to do is dance
Molotov cocktail-the local drink
And all she wants to do is dance, dance
They mix ’em up right in the kitchen sink
And all she wants to do is dance
Crazy people walkin’ round With blood in their eyes
And all she wants to do is dance, dance
Wild-eyed pistol wavers Who ain’t afraid to die

And all she wants to do is-
And all she wants to do is dance
And make romance
She can’t feel the heat comin’ off the street
She wants to party
She wants to get down
And all she wants to do is-
And all she wants to do is dance

Well, the government bugged the men’s Room in the local disco lounge
And all she wants to do is dance, dance
To keep the boys from sellin’ All the weapons they could scrounge
And all she wants to do is dance
But that don’t keep the boys From makin’ a buck or two
And all she wants to do is dance, dance
They still can sell the army All the drugs that they can do

And all she wants to do is-
And all she wants to do is dance
And make romance

Well, we barely made the airport For the last plane out
As we taxied down the runway I could hear the people shout
They said, don’t come back here yankee! But if I ever do-
I’ll bring more money ’cause all she wants to do is dance

And make romance
Never mind the hear comin’ off the street
She wants to party
She wants to get down
All she wants to do is-
All she wants to do is dance
All she wants to do is dance
And make romance
All she wants to do is dance

Canned Heat (Just Dance) by Jamiroquai
=============================================
You know this boogie is for real.
I used to buy my faith in worship,
But then my chance to Heaven slipped.
I used to worry about the future
But then I throw my caution to the wind.
I had no reason to be care free
No no no, until I took a trip to the other side of town
Yeah yeah yeah, you know I heard that boogie rhythm
Hey, I had no choice but to get down down down down.

Dance, nothing left for me to do but dance,
Off these bad times I'm going through, just dance
Got canned heat in my heals tonight baby

I feel the thunder see the lightning
I know this anger's heaven sent.
So I've got to hang out all my hang-ups
Because of the boogie I feel so hell-bent
It's just an instant gut reaction, that I got
I know I never ever felt like this before,
I dont know what to do
But then thats nothing new,
Stuck between hell and high water
I need a cure to make it through.

Hey, dancing, nothing left for me to do but dance
Off these bad times I'm going through, just dance,
Hey got canned heat in my heals tonight baby
You know know know I'm gonna dance yeah
Off all the nasty things that people say.

Gonna dance, gonna dance my blues away tonight
Dance, come on got canned heat in my heals tonight
Canned heat in my heals tonight.

Dancing Queen by ABBA
=============================================
You can dance, you can jive, having the time of your life
See that girl, watch that scene, dig in the dancing queen

Friday night and the lights are low
Looking out for the place to go
Where they play the right music, getting in the swing
You come in to look for a king
Anybody could be that guy
Night is young and the music’s high
With a bit of rock music, everything is fine
You’re in the mood for a dance
And when you get the chance...

You are the dancing queen, young and sweet, only seventeen
Dancing queen, feel the beat from the tambourine
You can dance, you can jive, having the time of your life
See that girl, watch that scene, dig in the dancing queen

You’re a teaser, you turn ’em on
Leave them burning and then you’re gone
Looking out for another, anyone will do
You’re in the mood for a dance
And when you get the chance...

You are the dancing queen, young and sweet, only seventeen
Dancing queen, feel the beat from the tambourine
You can dance, you can jive, having the time of your life
See that girl, watch that scene, dig in the dancing queen

Moondance by Van Morrison
=============================================
Well it's a marvelous night for a moondance
With the stars up above in your eyes
A fantabulous night to make romance
'Neath the cover of October skies
And all the leaves on the trees are falling
To the sound of the breezes that blow
And I'm trying to please to the calling
Of your heart-strings that play soft and low

You know the night's magic
Seems to whisper and hush
And all the soft moonlight
Seems to shine in your blush...

Can I just have one a' more moondance with you, my love?
Can I just make some more romance with a' you, my love?

Well I wanna make love to you tonight
I can't wait till the morning has come
And I know now the time is just right
And straight into my arms you will run
And when you come my heart will be waiting
To make sure that you're never alone
There and then all my dreams will come true dear
There and then I will make you my own
And every time I touch you, you just tremble inside
And I know how much you want me that, you can't hide...

Can I just have one a' more moondance with you, my love?
Can I just make some more romance with a' you, my love?

Well it's a marvelous night for a moondance
With the stars up above in your eyes
A fantabulous night to make romance
'Neath the cover of October skies
And all the leaves on the trees are falling
To the sound of the breezes that blow
And I'm trying to please to the calling
Of your heart-strings that play soft and low

You know the night's magic
Seems to whisper and hush
And all the soft moonlight
Seems to shine in your blush...

One more moondance with you
In the moonlight
On a magic night
La, la, la, la, there's a moonlight
On a magic night
Can't I just have one more dance
With you my love?
