Modern Poetry Edition #37, (JB)

Ok sports fans, the JB MP is 100% over. In perhaps the most predictable election ever, the winner is "It's a Man's Man's Man's World." You know it's true. "But it wouldn't mean nothing -- nothing without a woman or a girl." That bit is true too.

Modern Poetry #37 {James Brown}
[9/22/05]
Say It Loud (I'm Black And I'm Proud) - James Brown
I Feel Good - James Brown
**It's A Man's Man's Man's World - James Brown
The Payback - James Brown
Superbad - James Brown

**Winner of MPulitzer

Anyway, JB make yourself at home. Our hallowed halls are happier because of your presence.

Those of you (and there were too many) who voted for 'I Feel Good,' please remember to vote for the best *poem* in the bunch, not the song you've heard the most. If you have forgotten what a poem looks like in song-lyric form, check this out, for the all-Paul MP edition: http://www.macdart.com/mp/mp_033-34.htm

And for those keeping score, the #1 nickname is Mr. Dynamite. Myself, I prefer Soul Brother #1 and HWMISB, but the voters go with Mr. Dynamite.

We're not sure what the next edition will bring or how soon it will be out, but we do have one order of business to extend to the academy. We are constantly on the lookout for talented poets, and as we near the 200-poem mark, we've come aware of some fine poets yet to be included in the Modern Poetry. Below is the list. If there are others who should be given consideration, send them in. I must admit that none of the exclusions bothers me too much -- so if you think the omission of one below is a travesty, get your 2 cents in on that. Who knows, it could have an impact.

Thanks. Keep running to your mailbox to see when the new MP will arrive.

It is that time again, ladies and lady killers. Time now for more of the
modern poetry. We love it, we're not above it and some of our poems are
dirrrty!

Welcome in again this week to another new member of the MP Academy, Allison
G. We look forward to your contributions. BTW, can we call you Alli G.?
Booyakasha!

Today's we are highlighting a poet who has yet to appear in the MP (I
think). This poet, born in Barnwell, is a native of South Carolina, like
several MP luminaries, and he has great hair.

Here he is ladies and gentlemen, please get ready to lavish a warm welcome
on him, he is The Godfather of Soul, the incomparable Mr. Dynamite, Soul
Brother #1, the undisputed Hardest Working Man in Show Business, the
Minister of the New Super-Heavy Funk, JB to his friends and lovers, Jaaames
Brooooown.

It's some inspired poetry in the oral tradition of performance poets from
centuries ago. Can you feel the audience's trance-like state when, in The
Payback, the crescendo is reached with the line "I don't know karate, but I
know KA-RAZY!!!! (yes we do!!)" ?

First though, before we get to the poems, please choose your favorite JB
nickname from the following:

-The Godfather of Soul
-Mr. Dynamite
-Soul Brother #1
-The Hardest Working Man in Show Business
-Minister of the New Super-Heavy Funk

And now the poems. Enjoy. And vote. Vote by reply email, and do a 'reply
to all' if you're so inclined.

Expect the pace to pick up. We have an irregular publishing schedule, but
we shoot for 26 editions a year which means we need to step it up a bit for
the next few months.

Say It Loud (I'm Black And I'm Proud) - James Brown
==========================================================
Now we demand a chance to do things for ourserlf
We're tired of beatin' our head against the wall
And workin' for someone else
We're people, we're just like the birds and the bees
We'd rather die on our feet
Than be livin' on our knees
Say it loud, I'm black and I'm proud

I Feel Good - James Brown
==========================================================
Whoa-oa-oa! I feel good, I knew that I would, now
I feel good, I knew that I would, now
So good, so good, I got you

Whoa! I feel nice, like sugar and spice
I feel nice, like sugar and spice
So nice, so nice, I got you

When I hold you in my arms
I know that I can't do no wrong
and when I hold you in my arms
My love won't do you no harm

and I feel nice, like sugar and spice
I feel nice, like sugar and spice
So nice, so nice, I got you

When I hold you in my arms
I know that I can't do no wrong
and when I hold you in my arms
My love can't do me no harm

and I feel nice, like sugar and spice
I feel nice, like sugar and spice
So nice, so nice, well I got you

Whoa! I feel good, I knew that I would, now
I feel good, I knew that I would
So good, so good, 'cause I got you
So good, so good, 'cause I got you
So good, so good, 'cause I got you

It's A Man's Man's Man's World - James Brown
==========================================================
This is a man's world
This is a man's world
But it wouldn't be nothing
Nothing without a woman or a girl
You see man made the car
To take us over the road
Man made the train
To carry the heavy load
Man made the electric light
To take as out of the dark
Man made the boat for the water
Like Noah made the ark
This is a man's man's man's world
But it wouldn't be nothing
Nothing without a woman or a girl

Man thinks about the little bitty baby girl
And the baby boys
Man makes them happy
Cause man made them toys
And after man made everyhing
Everything he can
You know that man makes money
To buy from other men
This is a man's world
But it wouldn't be nothing
Nothing not one little thing
Without a woman or a girl

He's lost in the wilderness
He's lost in bitterness

Superbad - James Brown
==========================================================
Watch me, watch me
I got it, watch me, I got it, hey

I got something that, Makes me wanna shout
I got something that tells me What it's all about

I got soul and I'm super bad
I got soul and I'm super bad

Now I got a move
That tells me what to do
Sometimes I tease

Now I got a move
That tells me what to do
Sometimes I feel so nice
I wanna try myself with you

I got soul and I'm super bad
I'm a lover, I love to do my thing
And I don't need no one else
Sometimes I feel so nice, good God
I jump back, I wanna kiss myself

I got soul and I'm super bad
Hey, I said I'm super bad
Bridge, come on

Up and down
And round and round
Up and down, all around

Right on, people
Let it all hang out
If you don't
Brothers and sisters
Then you won't know
What it's all about

Gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme
Gimme, gimme, gimme, yeah
Come on

I got the something
That makes me wanna shout
I got that thing that
Tells me what it's all about

I got soul and I'm super bad
