Modern Poetry Edition #26, (1st Year Anniversary Edition)

Anchorage was narrowly nipped by Harry Chapin's
Taxi for the MPulitzer for the March 8th Edition
of the MP (#26 if you're scoring at home).

Harry and 'chelle were the only ones getting votes,
so TVZ and S&G and Leonard Cohen went 0-for with
Pancho and Lefty, ...Troubled Water and Everybody
Knows, surely the most impressive triumvirate of
modern poems to score zero votes.

Close followers of the MP will remember that Harry
had a lot of popular support for 30,000 Pounds of
Bananas back in MP #17, but was beat for the prize
by Lou Reed's Ode to Heroin.

My time's up.  Enjoy the soon-to-be-released
Hall & Oates edition.

**Winner of MPulitzer

Happy MP Anniversary everyone!  One year ago today (except that it was on a
Friday back then) the first edition of the MP came out.

Come on and vote for your faves.  The "Anchorage" is leading handily so far,
but it's early.

Here's a brand new poem from noted wordsmiths Snoop Dogg and Justin
Timberlake that I really like.  This one you should listen to as well as
read.  If you're as old as me and you listen close you'll also hear the Gap
Band's Charlie Wilson in there.

Yo, check this.  High-Quality MP this week.  A fine edition of modern poetry
for your amusement and enrichment.  Most of these should be somewhat
familiar.  If not, put down the John Mayer CD and get to your amazon.com.

This week, in homage to the 1-year Anniversary of the MP and also to honor
March, the national month of poetry, I'll be sprinkling lines from this
week's MP liberally throughout my casual conversation, and even a few will
go out in my professional correspondences.  You might hear me say any or all
of these:

"Hey 'chelle, you know it's kinda funny..."
"Leroy says, 'Hello!'"
"Everybody knows that the dice are loaded"
"Everybody knows the fight was fixed "
"Sail On Silver Girl"
"When you're down and out, When you're on the street ..."
"Your breath's as hard as kerosene" {that one will work down to the Bobcat, I think}
"They only let him hang around, Out of kindness I suppose"
"The poets tell how Pancho fell, Lefty's livin' in a cheap hotel.
 ... The desert's quiet and Cleveland's cold"
"A lady up ahead waved to flag me down.  She got in at the light"
"And she said, How are you Harry.  I said, How are you Sue"
"Well, another man might have been angry, And another man might have been hurt"

I suggest you do the same.  Use mine own or come up with yourn own.  If this
catches on, the whole world could be talking in modern poems by St.
Patrick's Day.

Enjoy.  And vote.  Irish votes count double.

Pancho and Lefty by Townes Van Zandt
============================== ============================== ====
Living on the road my friend
Was gonna keep you free and clean
Now you wear your skin like iron
Your breath's as hard as kerosene
You weren't your mama's only boy
But her favorite one it seems
She began to cry when you said goodbye
And sank into your dreams

Pancho was a bandit boys
His horse was fast as polished steel
Wore his gun outside his pants
For all the honest world to feel
Pancho met his match you know
On the deserts down in Mexico
Nobody heard his dying words
That's the way it goes

All the federales say
They could have had him any day
They only let him hang around
Out of kindness I suppose

Lefty he can't sing the blues
All night long like he used to
The dust that Pancho bit down south
Ended up in Lefty's mouth
The day they laid poor Pancho low
Lefty split for Ohio
Where he got the bread to go
There ain't nobody knows

All the federales say
They could have had him any day
They only let him slip away
Out of kindness I suppose

The poets tell how Pancho fell
Lefty's livin' in a cheap hotel
The desert's quiet and Cleveland's cold
So the story ends we're told
Pancho needs your prayers it's true,
But save a few for Lefty too
He just did what he had to do
Now he's growing old

A few gray federales say
They could have had him any day
They only let him go so wrong
Out of kindness I suppose

Taxi by Harry Chapin
============================== ============================== ====
It was raining hard in 'Frisco
I needed one more fare to make my night
A lady up ahead waved to flag me down
She got in at the light

Oh, where you going to, my lady blue
It's a shame you ruined your gown in the rain
She just looked out the window
She said, Sixteen Parkside Lane

Something about her was familiar
I could swear I'd seen her face before
But she said, I'm sure you're mistaken
And she didn't say anything more

It took a while, but she looked in the mirror
And she glanced at the license for my name
A smile seemed to come to her slowly
It was a sad smile, just the same

And she said, How are you Harry
I said, How are you Sue
Through the too many miles
And the too little smiles
I still remember you

It was somewhere in a fairy tale
I used to take her home in my car
We learned about love in the back of a Dodge
The lesson hadn't gone too far

You see, she was gonna be an actress
And I was gonna learn to fly
She took off to find the footlights
And I took off to find the sky

Oh, I've got something inside me
To drive a princess blind
There's a wild man, wizard
He's hiding in me, illuminating my mind
Oh, I've got something inside me
Not what my life's about
'Cause I've been letting my outside tide me
Over 'til my time, runs out

(Yes, she's flying, afraid to fall)
(I'll tell you why baby's crying)
('Cause she's dying, aren't we all)

There was not much more for us to talk about
Whatever we had once was gone
So I turned my cab into the driveway
Past the gate and the fine trimmed lawns

And she said, we must get together
But I knew it'd never be arranged
And she handed me twenty dollars
For a two fifty fare
She said, Harry, keep the change

Well, another man might have been angry
And another man might have been hurt
But another man never would've let her go
I stashed the bill in my shirt

And she walked away in silence
It's strange, how you never know
But we'd both gotten what we'd asked for
Such a long, long time ago

You see, she was gonna be an actress
And I was gonna learn to fly
She took off to find the footlights
And I took off for the sky

And here, she's acting happy
Inside her handsome home
And me, I'm flying in my taxi
Taking tips, and getting stoned
I go flying so high, when I'm stoned

Everybody Knows by Leonard Cohen
============================== ============================== ====
Everybody knows that the dice are loaded
Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed
Everybody knows that the war is over
Everybody knows the good guys lost
Everybody knows the fight was fixed
The poor stay poor, the rich get rich
That's how it goes
Everybody knows
Everybody knows that the boat is leaking
Everybody knows that the captain lied
Everybody got this broken feeling
Like their father or their dog just died

Everybody talking to their pockets
Everybody wants a box of chocolates
And a long stem rose
Everybody knows

Everybody knows that you love me baby
Everybody knows that you really do
Everybody knows that you've been faithful
Ah give or take a night or two
Everybody knows you've been discreet
But there were so many people you just had to meet
Without your clothes
And everybody knows

Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

And everybody knows that it's now or never
Everybody knows that it's me or you
And everybody knows that you live forever
Ah when you've done a line or two
Everybody knows the deal is rotten
Old Black Joe's still pickin' cotton
For your ribbons and bows
And everybody knows

And everybody knows that the Plague is coming
Everybody knows that it's moving fast
Everybody knows that the naked man and woman
Are just a shining artifact of the past
Everybody knows the scene is dead
But there's gonna be a meter on your bed
That will disclose
What everybody knows

And everybody knows that you're in trouble
Everybody knows what you've been through
From the bloody cross on top of Calvary
To the beach of Malibu
Everybody knows it's coming apart
Take one last look at this Sacred Heart
Before it blows
And everybody knows

Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

Oh everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

Everybody knows

Anchorage by Michelle Shocked
============================== ============================== ====
I took time out to write to my old friend
I walked across that burning bridge
I mailed my letter off to Dallas
But her reply came from Anchorage, Alaska

She said: Hey girl it's about time you wrote
It's been over two years now, my old friend
Take me back to the days of the foreign telegrams
And the all-night rock 'n rollin'
Hey Chel, we was wild then

Hey Chel, you know it's kinda funny
Texas always seems so big
Until you're hangin' out with polar bears
Up in Anchorage

Hey girl I think the last time I saw you
Was on me and Leroy's wedding day
Tell me, what was the name of that love song you played?
I forgot how it goes
I don't recall how it goes, hoooooe

Anchorage
Anchored down in Anchorage

Leroy got a better job so we moved
Kevin lost a tooth, now he's started school
I've got a brand new eight month old baby girl
I sound like a housewife
Hey Chel, I think I'm a housewife

Hey Chel, you know it's kinda funny
Texas always seems so big
But you know you're in the largest state in the Union
When you're anchored down in Anchorage

Hey girl what's it like to be in New York?
New York City, imagine that!
Tell me, what's it like to be a skateboard punk rocker?
Leroy says, "Send a picture"
Leroy says, "Hello!"
Leroy says, "Aw, keep on rocking girl"
Yeah, keep on rocking

Hey girl it's about time you wrote
It's been over two years you know, my old friend
Take me back to the days of the foreign telegrams
And the all-night rock 'n rollin'
We was wild then
Keep on rollin'

Oh Anchorage
You there in Anchorage
Oh Anchorage

Bridge Over Troubled Water by Simon and Garfunkel
============================== ============================== ====
When you're weary, feeling small
When tears are in your eyes,
I will dry them all
I'm on your side
When times get rough
And friends just can't be found

Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down

When you're down and out
When you're on the street
When evening falls so hard
I will comfort you
I'll take your part
When darkness comes
And pain is all around

Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down

Sail on silver girl
Sail on by
Your time has come to shine
All your dreams are on their way
See how they shine
When you need a friend
I'm sailing right behind

Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind
